J. Scott Tharp began the practice of law in 1959 and has remained in general practice since then, except from 1963 to 1965, when he was in-house counsel for a local corporation. As the practice grew, James A. Liotta and David R. Janes became associates, and the partnership of Tharp, Liotta & Janes was formed in 1981. Karen M. Yokum joined the firm in 1983 as an associate and has since became a partner. David R. Janes was elected Judge of the Marion County Circuit Court in 2000 and is no longer associated with the firm. Jarrod G. DeVault joined the firm in 2004 as an associate, and our newest associate, John R. Funkhouser, came on board in 2013.
Our firm is a general practice firm which focuses on real estate, estate planning, estate administration, probate matters and representation for adoptions and conservatorship. Other areas in which the firm is active include elder law, corporate law, and municipal and public service district law. We are dedicated to providing legal services to the general public as well as corporate clients.
 
 
Karen Yokum-attorney in Fairmont, WV
 
Karen Yokum has resided in the Fairmont, West Virginia, area for most of her life. She attended West Virginia University and graduated from Fairmont State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in psychology. She subsequently graduated from West Virginia University College of Law with a Doctor of Jurisprudence. She has been a member of the law firm since 1983. Mrs. Yokum is a member of several professional organizations including the Marion County Bar Association, the West Virginia State Bar, the West Virginia Bar Association, the American Bar Association, and the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys. Her practice focuses on estate planning, probate law, real estate law, elder law, and small corporate law. She is also a member of a local bank board of directors.

J. Scott Tharp, a native West Virginian, is a graduate of West Virginia Wesleyan College and West Virginia University College of Law and served in the United States Army. He has served as president of the Marion County Bar Association, and on the Board of Governors of the West Virginia State Bar. He has been an officer of the West Virginia Trial Lawyers Association, and served as State Committeeman of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America. He is a member of the West Virginia Bar Association and the American Bar Association, and is a Fellow of the West Virginia State Bar Foundation. He is active in his church and in community activities. During his legal career Mr. Tharp has been involved in virtually every facet of the practice of law, including personal injury, medical malpractice, products liability, labor law, real estate, probate, and municipal law. His practice currently is focused on real estate, probate, and estate administration.
 
 
 
Jarrod G. DeVault-Attorney in Fairmont, WV
 
Jarrod G. DeVault was born and raised in Fairmont, West Virginia. After graduating from Fairmont Senior High School, he served on active duty with the United States Army as a legal specialist and court reporter and is a veteran of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Mr. DeVault graduated from Fairmont State College with a bachelor of arts degree in English and obtained his law degree from the West Virginia University College of Law. He is a member of the Marion County Bar Association, West Virginia State Bar, the West Virginia Bar Association, and the American Bar Association. His practice includes residential and commercial real estate transactions, corporate representation, and municipal law.
 
 
 
John R. Funkhouser-attorney in Fairmont, WV
 
John R. Funkhouser is a native of Wardensville, West Virginia. He is a graduate of West Virginia University, where he earned bachelor’s degrees in English and Political Science. Mr. Funkhouser earned his law degree from the University of Dayton School of Law, in Dayton, Ohio, where he was awarded the Pro-Bono Commitment to Community Service Award. Mr. Funkhouser is a member of the Marion County Bar Association, the West Virginia State Bar and the American Bar Association. Mr. Funkhouser is a member of the North Central West Virginia Volleyball Board of Officials, as well as a Nationally Certified NCAA Volleyball Official. Mr. Funkhouser currently focuses his practice in the areas of civil litigation, criminal defense and municipal law.
